Pumpkin progress - week 2

pumpkin - August 9

I’ve always loved Halloween. And when I was a kid I always wanted to grow pumpkins, but we never did (at least not successfully). When I first moved to this house over 2 years ago, I attempted to grow a pumpkin in my front yard (since my back “yard” is all deck). The plant did pretty well for a while, but never presented any pumpkins and eventually bit the dust from a bad case of powdery mildew. I decided it was because there were overhead sprinklers in that part of the yard, and also not enough sunlight during the day.

This year on a whim I decided to try growing a pumpkin in a large container on my back deck. I figure, if I can grow CORN in a container, anything seems possible! And last year I successfully grew cantaloupes…the vines just spill out and trail on the deck. So why not?

Anyway… I’m super excited about a silly pumpkin. I even put a foam cushion under it to keep it protected from the deck! There’s another ping-pong sized one on the plant too, but I will wait and see if it shrivels up and dies. At least I’ve got one going strong… as you can see from the Itchy Monkey pic above, it is now about the size of a softball. And growing fast! Last week it was half that size.

I’ll take a weekly photo to show how it’s coming along. I can’t wait to see how big it gets. Not expecting anything huge… but a nice carve-able size would be good enough.

today’s harvest

garden grown

Plus about 100000 green beans. BTW, the cherry tomatoes are “Sun Gold” - orange/yellow when ripe.
